Canyou answere this for me?

When vince ordered 20 plants for his flower border, he asked for 20 geraniums. he ordered 2 boxes of red geraniums and 1 box of white geraniums. something went wrong with the order and,although he got 20 geranium plants there was 1 box of red and 3 of white, how many geraniums of each color did vince want? How many of each color did he get?

Canyou answere this for me?
Well, first you have to determine how many of each color in a box. From the question, we know that each color is boxed in a different amount.

So.... let r=# red geraniums in a box, and w= # white geraniums in a box

2r+1w = 20 (from the second sentence)

1r+3w = 20 (from the third sentence)

Solve the first equation for w:

w = 20 - 2r

Plug it into the 2nd equation:

1r+ 3(20-2r) = 20

1r+(60 - 6r) = 20

60 - 5r = 20

-5r = -40

r = 8

Then plug r into the equation for w:

w = 20 - 2(8)

w = 4

So there are 8 geraniums in a box of red, and 4 in a box of white.

Therefore, he wanted 2 boxes, or 16 plants of red, and 1 box, or 4 plants of white.

Instead, he got 1 box, or 8 plants of red, and 3 boxes, or 12 plants, of white.
Reply:x is the number of red per box

y is the number of white per box

ordered 2x+1y =20

got 1x + 3y = 20

so x = 20-3y

use substitution and get 2(20-3y) +1y = 20

40 - 6y +1y = 20

40-5y =20

-5y = -20

y = 4

x = 20 - 3(4)

x = 20 -12

x = 8

so it was 8 red per box and 4 white per box
