Has anyone ever come across a climbing geranium.? My friend inherited one when she moved house.?

"Trailing Geraniums", "Climbing Geraniums" are all IVY Geraniums. They are actually Pelargoniums. But we ALL call them Geraniums. I have seen Ivy Geraniums climb if they have some support. But it always seems accidental. I don't know if you could really train them to go where you want.

Has anyone ever come across a climbing geranium.? My friend inherited one when she moved house.?
It's called an ivy geranium, I think that's what you mean. Take care of it just like a regular one, they will spread to several times thier size. they look great in hanging baskets and will droop to about two feet.
Reply:i knew you could get trailing geraniums but not climbers!

unless it's the same thing. tell your friend good luck with it, I'm sooo jealous!!!
Reply:Yes I had one , the blooming thing wouldn't stay in it's pot

, I lost count of how many times I had to get it down from the curtains LOL

How do I kill creeping charlie (wild geranium in these parts)? It drinks Killex and laughs at dethatching.?

Alas, poor Yorick!

You must remove these delightful beauties by hand! Make sure to get them before they bloom and dispose of all weeds in a plastic bag--they will make seeds even after being pulled!

How long does it take for a geranium plant to grow?

I planted 4 little guys ( 6 inch pot ) in a a 6x6 foot area. 3 years later I was trimming the sides off. The area had a lot of rocks and the dirt is as hard as a rock, but they seem happy. They only get about 3 hours of direct sun in the afternoon and I only water them once or twice a week. Geraniums are very hardy and grow easily and fast.

mine are getting big in a mostly morning sun spot on my front lawn area, make sure you have lots of water for them.
Reply:Mine grow great and have constant blooms with bi-weekly use of Miracle grow.

PS: I have notice my red ones grow faster than the pink.
Reply:reach full growth 8 years
Reply:It hard to say. It matters where it is kept the room temperature how often you water it and how fertile th soil is.

For it to germinate i would say 3 - 14 days to start to shoot up about 15 - 18 days and then about 25 - 40 to grow quite a reasonable height.

It should say on the pack of seeds.

To grow to full height you're saying about 7- 9 years.

What kinds of pigment are present in Geranium leafs?
Chlorophyll and Xanthophyll both.
Reply:Mostly chlorophyll, but also xanthophylls--they're the yellow pigments which show up when the chlorophyll fades at the end of the growing season.

How much of a 5 yr. established geranium that's about 3ft.by3 may i prune w/out shocking it?

It's not really flowering right now so i thought i'd prune it. i'm thinking 1/4 to 1/3 of it. They're very hardy but i've had some idiots severely butcher them and kill them.

Geraniums are very tolerant. Actually you could cut it down almost to the dirt, and it would come back.
Reply:ed is correct but i would give it a prune of about a third and some fertiliser and it will be right

I want to purchase (2) hanging geranium plants for the front of house, facing south. Do they like fertilizer?
Yes definitely fertilize once a week. You can use liquid fertilizer or they sell fertilizer that you put in once for the entire season (they are time released) Depending if they are in full sun and how hot depends how much you water. In pots, I would water every day--You don't want them to dry out completely. Also remember that when a flower blooms then dies, make sure you cut it off-- that will make it so that the energy is left to produce new blooms.
Reply:Yes they Like Fertilizer it gives them more and Stronger Blooms. I suppose Miracle Gro will do nicely as Fertilizer, use between now and September every Week. When you think it is starting to dry out put Water in it. I would say about a Pint of Water per Plant. I had Hanging Geraniums one Year very nice Plants.

Why are the leaves on my geranium flower turning yellow?

i have always heard to pull off the leaves when they turn yellow and new ones will grow back. well, i have plenty of flower blooms, but no leaves, and it doesn't look like any new leaves are coming in. any suggestions?

Why are the leaves on my geranium flower turning yellow?
It could be you have been over-watering or perhaps you over-fertilized and burned the leaves.
Reply:check the soil and the roots of the plants. Two problems, one too much water, two bugs. if the soil is too wet let it dry out some before watering again. If its bugs there are several products on the market. Also the nitrogen in the soil may be too rich. I use miracle grow potting soil that has a balance of nitrogen in the soil.
Reply:you are watering the flowers to much
Reply:Needs feeding and probably does not have good drainage. Make sure there is drain holes in the bottom of the pot. Feed with Miracle grow, they love it and it will grow leaves back. Good Luck.
Reply:could be lack of sufficient light or water. Geraniums usually can tolerate a lot of neglect - they do best that way. If you fertilise too much you get leaves instead of flowers. your plant seems to b the opposite so I think it could be either the light situation or water.

hope that helps
Reply:I believe you are over-watering the poor thing.

What should I do when my geranium cuttings start to turn yellow please?

You should keep them in water until roots have begun to grow - so if your yellowing ones are potted up take them out, trim the end of the stem, remove seriously yellowed leaves, and put them in water. When roots have developed pot them again, if no roots develop within 2-3 weeks then discard. Healthy geranium cuttings are generally almost 100% success rate, but the yellowing suggests you might be better off starting again with fresh cuttings if you can.

What should I do when my geranium cuttings start to turn yellow please?
You may be over-watering them, or they might need fertilizer or iron, or they are kept too warm.
Reply:Cut the end of the stems off to freshen them up. Then place them in water with a little sugar and salt added. They will last much longer.
Reply:Go to the doctor?
Reply:Were you trying to root them and they turned yellow. Sometimes that just happens before they take root and then they will come back to life and spread. Some make it and some don't. I think if you put Vitamin B in the soil and just baby it, water it and put in the sun, it might just be ok. You will know later of course, but don't give up. If it gets really limp like it is going to die, then that might be too late, but if it just goes a little yellow but the stalk is still green, just leave it alone and will eventually be ok, it might take into the next season, but time will tell. They can really spread just from a cutting, so hang in there. Unfortunately, the snails like them and draw the snails, but you can put snail bate if you have no animals to protect with the bait as it is poison to animals, dogs, cats, etc., pets.
Reply:Things to consider:

Where were the cuttings taken from (leaf, twig, stem, root, old growth, new growth)?

Do you have a big cutting that can't get the nourishment it needs from the cut end? Shorten the stem or remove leaves low on the stem allowing more food to get to the upper, growing tips.

Is the water clean or getting moldy? Keep it clean.

Do not keep it too hot or too cold, room temp is ok.

Do not give it full sunlight, it can't use it now.

Too much fertilizer can kill a plant. If you must fertilize, use very little and use something with a high proportion of phosphorous (the second number)- it helps roots grow.

Sugar in the water might help. Vitamin B complex might help.

Salt in the water won't help.

Some plants root best if put in a damp medium such as peat moss or perlite. When roots form, do not try to remove the rooting medium, just place the soil with embedded roots into a more permanent pot. Roots need air too, so drowning them in water or very wet soil can kill even healthy roots.

Cacti have weak, sensitive roots that rot easily but I rooted a broken piece in damp perlite in a month or so.

The biggest mistake people make is "loving their plants to death" by giving them too much water or too much fertilizer. Too much of a good thing is not good.
Reply:cut them down and put indoors 4 the winter
Reply:give them more light

CAN THE SPENT FLOWER OF A GERANIUM BE SAVED AND PLANTED AS SEEDS FoR ANOTHER SEASON LIKE OTHER FLOWERS?

CAN THE SPENT FLOWER OF A GERANIUM BE SAVED AND PLANTED AS SEEDS FoR ANOTHER SEASON LIKE OTHER FLOWERS?
umm if i understand the question correctly you want to "reproduce" geraniums? you need to take cutting of the plant and root them, using rooting compound helps a lot and is readily available in your local garden center.good luck
Reply:Yes you can but only IF the flowers set seeds. You can tell this by looking at the base of each little segment of the flower head and if it swollen then it has a seed.
Reply:You can certainly make another plant - it would be most easy to take a cutting. The seeds might be less likely to be successful.

The leaves on some of my geranium plants, now outdoors, have gone a bright red colour. Is this a problem?

It just means they are suffering from stress. Thsi usually happens in autumn as the temperature drops and the plant begins to shut down but I expect it's just a bit of a shock if they're just been put outdoors. They should get over it, make sure they don't stay too wet.

what

What is the reason my geranium leaves are going red (and some yellow)?

red leaves are caused by the temperature going colder than the geranium likes... it will signal a slowdown in energy... the plant will not produce blooms for a while... it will , in effect, pout........

yellow leaves are too much water.....

What is the reason my geranium leaves are going red (and some yellow)?
over watering / not enough sun

its not a problem, they are very tollerant of different conditions.... just take off the red / yellow leaves, or even cut off the whole section if its bad....

just make sure some green is left on it.... get it outside in the sun, and let it dry out a little... :-)

i'd appriciate you answering my question too :-)
Reply:geraniums don't like to be watered all the time. let them dry out in between, them give them a good dose of water, so it runs out the bottom. They might also need a slow release fertilizer.
Reply:Fluctuations in temperature, plus too much water. If they are in pots reduce water (Geraniums require very little water) and move them to a warmer/sheltered place.

OMG how do you grow geranium cuttings without killing them?

How do you grow a good sized cutting without killing it lol?

(yea i accidentally did :(!!!!)

OMG how do you grow geranium cuttings without killing them?
cut a piece of geranium stem with several leaves, remove the lower two leaves,

put the cutting on a table without any water

this is a very important step, the cutting needs to callus and the end needs to dry thoroughly prior to being planted or placed in water.

after the cutting has dried for at least a couple of hours, lightly dust the cut end with rooting hormone and place in water

do not let any leaves be submerged

if you don't have rooting hormone just place the cutting in water after it has dried for several hours

place in a window that gets bright indirect light

plant when roots are 2 inches long

EDIT- as someone who has taken 500 cuttings every morning for weeks I do recommend the air callusing because it reduces the incidence of rot and when a home gardener has only a few plants to take cuttings from you don't want to run the risk of letting even one of your babies rot.

use a sharp knife also. fluff
Reply:New growth cutting will root in water in 5-7 days. Sorry Fluff, you don't have to let cuttings dry - cut, to water immediately. Change the water if it gets cloudy.

Grape leaf geraniums won't root in water, must use rootone, place in damp potting soil.

What causes yellow leaves on geranium plants?

It sounds like your problem is either too much water or not enough water. Geraniums and begonias like well drained soil. They need a drink, but not moist soil. I water mine once a week, instead of every other day like I do my other flowers and ferns.

What causes yellow leaves on geranium plants?
Yellow leaves on plants are usually an indication of over watering.
Reply:When I first started gardening I loved my plants to death! It cost me a lot of money replacing plants every couple of weeks!

Its more than likely too much water. I now wait until the top two inches of my plants gets dry before I water them. You can use a moisture meter to measure the top couple of inches of dirt or you can use your finger.

Hope this helps.
Reply:Most likely over-watering or over-feeding...Check around base of plant to see what's going on...If it's in a pot it may need to be transplanted and you should tip it out to check the soil and roots, anyway.
Reply:Lack of water and sun and proper nutrients.
Reply:yellow leaves means too much water
Reply:Certain plants, like geraniums, naturally have yellow leaves. It's just an older leaf, and past a certain age, they begin to yellow. You may be doing nothing wrong if you have a few yellow leaves.

Have you ever seen a Geranium with yellow blooms?

Geranium is the word used for what is truly a pelargonium. It's the one that is an annual in this midwest climate.

A true geranium is often a perrenial and I haven't seen yellow. There are several nice varieties I've been happy with from a mail order place.

I need help taking a geranium cutting. I have tried soooo many times. what am i doing wrong?
Belize Missionary is correct about letting them dry at the wound site--this is due to rot setting in other wise--then you would notice that your plant stem will get mushy then "croak".

I just stick them in moist soil - but not soaking. They usually root in about a week or two--but don't peak in the soil because you may dislodge the new little root hairs. Make sure you keep off any little flower buds so that all the stimulation is going to growing roots. After you get the knack, you'll find geranium propagation to be a breeze. Good luck!
Reply:You should harvest a cutting about 6 inches long, and doesn't have a flower or flower bud on it (flowering drains energy from it). It should be leafy, and have at least a couple of leaves near the base. Snip those lower leaves off, the buds will be where the roots grow from. Set the cutting in a cup of water, and don't let it dry out. Indirect light, and lots of it. Once roots form, stick it in potting soil and keep it moist. It'll take several weeks.
Reply:just take a cutting, leave it laying around for a couple of days (yes -really!), strip off all the lower leaves, put in a pot of clean soil and water well. keep moist and the cutting should root in a few days.

an alternative method would be to take a cutting, put it in a bottle of water and allow it to root. this works best if you use something like the bottom of a plastic liter bottle. when the geranium begins to root you can add a little bit of soil to the container. gradually add more and more. eventually you cutting will be growing in soil, though it was rooted in water.

hope this helps....and i am very serious about allowing the geranium to dry for a day or so before planting. :)

How do I plant saved geranium plants. They just look like rootsand dead stems One has a green stem starting?

Cut off the old "dead" stems.. back to the green that's putting out. Lots of tender loving care.. and not too much water! The plant should continue to put on new foliage.. good luck

Can I plant a geranium into the ground?

All Day Long! Geraniums like good drainage, and they like to become almost dry in between waterings.

Can I plant a geranium into the ground?
Yes during the spring (after the last freeze) til late fall (until the 1st freeze) depending where you live. I love to do container plants that allows me to move them through out the yard and I can bring them in during the winter. Good Luck.... with your wonderful plant!!!
Reply:By geranium I take it you mean pelargonium . . . . . and the answer depends on where you live!

Many places in the world the answer is a big yes, and as long as you get no bad frosts you can leave them in over winter too.

For summer, once the plant is established well in the ground then no watering will be needed. Best to use small plants to begin with, they establish really well and grow quickly when they are happy.

My Mum, in Devon in the UK west country, has many geraniums that she's left in the ground for years on end, and some grow to 5' high in the summer because they are so well established and don't get killed back too badly in the winter!
Reply:Yes, but if you do, you will need to remember to water it.
Reply:yes, i have heaps in the ground.

2 main varieties - ivy pelargonian - glossy leaves, thinner stem = great for hangong baskets or trailing.

zonal pelargonian = traditional geranium - great for the ground, hardy plant, drought resistant

I am killing my geranium......?

I don't know how to keep it alive.....I do water it so it's not that! Please help. The plant is called Willamena and as it has a name, I'd be commiting an offence if it died.

I am killing my geranium......?
keep it inside, give it plenty of light and try putting coffee grounds in the pot
Reply:What area of the country do you live? I normally cut mine down to a few leaves and the main stem in the winter and bring it into my garage which doesn't get cold enough to freeze. When it starts warming in the spring I bring it out to the warm sun, but wait until the last freeze to leave it out. Greaniums are heat loving plants, and a freeze will kill them.
Reply:It's coming to the time of year when it will die off naturally....it should bounce back in the Spring though!
Reply:Keep it in a cool frost free place over winter - don't over water it - but keep the soil damp - it should survive the winter. .
Reply:Miine come in during winter in zone 8. They'll tell you when to water, might want to aerate too. Otherwise they thrive on neglect. You can root cuttings in water.
Reply:I pity you!
Reply:I'm guessing that Willamina is a pelargonium rather than a geranium. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, it's preparing for winter (not dying) and overwatering might in fact do more harm than good.

Put the plant and pot in a cool dry shaded place inside the house (cellar is good) and keep the soil just moist until spring.
Reply:All oudoor geraniums have a dormant period when they tend to loose alot of leaves, (they go yellow first and then rusty brown), unless it is a really hot climate.

Firstly take off all the brown and yellow leaves. Give it a good shake to get rid of bugs and then if it is a large plant cut it back to a pair of stronge green shoots / leaves on each stem and get it out of the cold / wet. Reduce watering to once every couple of months during winter.

If it is small enough then bring it indoors and treat as a house plant until spring.

Also take some cuttings. Just take a sharp knife and cut about 2 inches, (5cm) off a green shoot, remove the lower leaves and any flower and just put it into a pot of compost. Dampen with some water and stand on your window sill. They grow really easily and I can almost guarantee that the cuttings will survive.

Good luck.
Reply:The thing that kills most plants is overwatering. You only need to water it when you can stick your finger in the pot and it feels dry: make sure the saucer under the plant is not full of water, so the plant is standing in it, the top of the soil can feel dry and the bottom still be soaking wet. Give it as much sun as you can because they will not thrive without plenty of light. They do go somewhat dormant in winter. Their thick stems store moisture sometwhat like succulents, so overwatering is very bad for geraniums. I have found if you cut them back below the bottom leaves, they will not regrow new leaves.

I don't understand the meaning of your question. Rephrase it and i may be able to give you a better answer.

Why won't my geranium bloom?

Since you didn't tell us whether you are growing these indoors, oufoors in containers, or in beds outdoors, I think making sure they are properly planted is a good start.

Also remember that the Regal and the Martha Washington are genetically engineered for indoor planting. If you have one of these and are attempting to grow one of them outdoors, this may be your problem.

Growing Geraniums In Beds

To plant geraniums outdoors, you must wait until all threat of frost has passed. Pick a spot that is sheltered from strong winds and gets at least 6 hours of sun a day. The soil should be well drained and mildly acidic (pH of 6.5 is ideal). Geraniums need fertilization for best growth and they thrive in beds that have a good supply of nitrogen. Before planting, apply a 5-10-5 fertilizer to the soil. After planting, you should fertilize every month with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Mulch the area and water at least once a week.

Growing In Planters Outdoors

Geraniums can be grown in planters on the porch, patio or garden. The ivy type geraniums are great for hanging baskets and window boxes. Make sure you use a container that is big enough for the plant or it will wilt (you may need to replant to prevent wilting as the plant grows). Use a soil that has enough aeration – either a commercial made mix or garden soil mixed with peat moss or perlite. Make sure you water it frequently but do not let it sit in water.

Growing Indoors

The Martha Washington and the Regal geraniums are not suited for outdoor growing, as I stated before, but can be beautiful indoor plants. Put our plant in a sunny window for best flowering. Plant in a well drained soil and use a fertilizer formulated for indoor plants. Fertilize monthly when plant is flowering but cut back to every two months in the fall and winter. Your geranium will do best if the day time temps are around 65 degrees with night temperature around 55.

Disease

Geraniums are hardy, but like any plant can be susceptible to disease. Some common disease are Black Leg where the stem becomes blackened and the leaves fall off, Leaf Spot where leaves become spotted and drop off, Gray Mold where the plant has gray moldy spots, Rust where the plant gets rusty looking spots and leaves turn yellow and drop off, Root Knot nematodes -swelled roots and stunted growth and Dropsy which produces lesions on the plants.

To combat most disease, remove all leaves that are infected, make sure you do not take cuttings from any plant with disease. When watering make sure you do not splash the leaves.

Pests

Some common geranium pests include:

Caterpillars - some caterpillars like to much on geraniums (perhaps they have heard of it’s medicinal properties?). These can be controlled with sprays.

Aphids - try controlling aphids with ladybugs or a special spray.

Whitefly - usually starts in the greenhouse but can spread to the garden on infested plants. Small white flys and black sooty goop can be seen on the leaves which will fall off after turning yellow. Can be controlled with sprays.

Mites - Causes leaves to curl and drop off – control with sprays.

Termites - Subterranean termites tunnel through the stems of geraniums causing them to turn yellow and die. Treat the soil with the appropriate termite treatment. Don’t let them get to your house!

Slugs - slugs love gardens but they also love beer. Leave a saucer out and you will catch more than your fair share of slugs!

I hope this helps!

Considering it is planted correctly then try to "deadhead" the plant. Take the old growth off the top and it should "double-out". I winter mine in the house and "deadhead" them every spring, right after planting them.

Why is my hardy geranium corm just lying on the soil looking very poorly instead of showing new growth?
Too much water.

Not enough water.

Needs a bigger pot.

Change the soil.

It has a disease.

Not enough plant food.

Too much plant food.
Reply:Geraniums don't have corms---they grow from cuttings and have roots. It should not lie on top of the soil it should be planted.

I have a geranium?

that has been flowering with red flowers continuously for the past 8 years, is there a reason why i now have red and pink flowers

I have a geranium?
This is impossible. the only flowers known to science that can change colour, naturally, are hydrangeas and this is due ti a change in the PH. They are experimenting by injecting dyes etc. but this is not your scenario. I have grown geraniums (pelargoniums) for 50 yrs. if you have one that changes colour after 8 yrs you are sitting on a fortune.

Reply:Any plant can "sport" off, with a branch of different color flowers or leaves, this is how new varieties are developed sometimes. They take the sport, propagate it, and have a while new plant from the variegation of the parent plant. This is probably what has happened to your geranium.

Why? Not a botany scientist, cannot explain what goes awry with the plants genes to do this.

Will my scented geranium (citronella) plant?

that i am bringing indoors for the winter make my cat sick, if she eats or plays with it???

Will my scented geranium (citronella) plant?
Your scented Geranium (citronella) or Mosquito Plant (Pelargonium citrosum) is not listed as a poisonous plant. Exposure to this plant should not cause any harm to you or your pets.

I seen miniature geranium and gardenias,do they bloom as good as regular sizes?

Positive input appreciated.

I seen miniature geranium and gardenias,do they bloom as good as regular sizes?
The miniature geraniums or gardenias, if taken cared of following the care instructions, will bloom as well as the regular sized geraniums or gardenias. Usually, the miniatures are designed as gifts. When they've outgrown their container, these plants should either be transferred to bigger pots or planted in the garden. For these plant to thrive, provide the following conditions:

Indoors - bright light but not direct sun, keep the soil moist but not soggy, fertilize at regular intervals;

Outdoors:

-Full sun, with some shading in the summer (in the hottest areas)

- An acid soil with a pH between 5 and 6

- Keep the soil moist, but never soggy

- Humidity

- Cool night temperatures

I have both plants, the geranium is really very hardy, but the gardenia needs a little more tlc.

Mom got a geranium in a hanging basket. She asked me to ask on Yahoo Answeres how to care for it so I am!?

Make sure it is kept in a spot where it will get some sunlight (though preferably not full sun) and keep the soil moist, maybe water once or twice a week, and use some plant feed every month. (there are many different sorts you can buy that will do the trick.)

Geraniums (Pelargonium species) are among the most popular flowering plants. They should be planted outdoors where they will receive at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily, but only after all danger of frost is past and the soil has warmed. They should be planted at the same soil level that they were growing at in their pot. The soil should be light, loose and well draining; to which you have added compost, leaf mold or peat moss. The optimum ph is 6.5 (slightly acid). Mulching is recommended to conserve water in the soil and to reduce high soil temperatures during the summer. Water geraniums at least once per week if you have had no rain. Geraniums dislike having wet leaves and flowers so it is best to use a soaker hose but if that isn't possible, water early in the day to allow leaves and flowers to dry before nightfall. Geraniums like to be well fed, so you should fertilize them with an all purpose 10-10-10 liquid plant food every 2-3 weeks when they actively growing. Remove the flowers promptly as they fade, or the bloom production will decline.

Most bedding plant geraniums are seed grown, and this is an excellent way to aquire different varieties. For the home gardener who wishes to keep a certain variety alive, geraniums will root easily from stem cuttings. Take cuttings in September from healthy plants which have been kept rather dry for a couple weeks. Use a clean, sharp knife and make a cutting 3 to 4 inches in length from the growing tips. Trim off the lower leaves from the cutting, and stick it into a coarse, sandy medium in a small pots or in flats, and water well. Place them in indirect light. Do not allow the cuttings to dry out. After roots are formed, move the new plants into full sun and water only enough to keep them from shriveling. Fertilize with a weak solution of liquid fertilizer every two weeks.
Reply:If you are looking for a plant that takes little care look at geraniums. Yes I know many people consider them 'old- fashioned' but they real need little care and there are many new varities including some that vine. If you forget to water them they are forgiving and unless you really abuse them, live. Geraniums are nice because if you go away for the weekend they will be fine even in very hot weather. Geraniums take full sun and like hot weather. They need little fertilization and need to dry out a little between waterings. In fact if you water them to much and give them to much attention they will look bad. One of my favorite types of geranium are the vining varieties called ivy-geraniums. The flowers on some of these look almost like small roses and the colors vary from white to pink to red and even lavender. Remember to 'dead-head' the flowers, or in layman's terms pick the dead blooms off, and they will flower all summer. If your geranium isn't blooming it is either getting to much fertilizer, to much water, or not enough light. Geraniums can also be wintered over indoors.
Reply:my mom used to have geraniums too. plants i get always die. maybe, i need to water them, huh.

Don't know how well bees like them

The common geraniums we all know and love are really pelagoniums. I have not noticed many bees on mine.

I have a geranium and somehow its petals keep falling off constantly. am i doing something wrong?

I make sure not to drown it in water and i give it lots of light and some shade.. help?

Geraniums need to be deadheaded to promote new growth. Simply snap the stem back to the base once the bloom fades. They enjoy LOTS of sun so skip the shade. Feed every other week with a combination of plant food and epsoms salts, using 1 tablespoon of each for each gallon of water.

I have a geranium that I love, can I bring it in the house when it gets cold and bring it back out in summer?

can some perianals be brought out of the cold and into the house and still live for the next blooming season?

Absolutely they can be overwintered. You can also take cuttings and plant them (I have put them in water a few days to start the roots...but do not keep them in water or they will rot).
Reply:Just treat them like your cat. You wouldn't want little kitty kitty to freeze right?
Reply:Yes, my mom bring in her geraniums every year. They do great by a sunny window
Reply:Geraniums are annuals that can be overwintered inside. Cuttings will root in water in a week or you can put them directly in moist soil to root. New leaves = roots.
Reply:Yes. They may loose their leaves but they can come back every year. I do it.

How did Rose Geranium get it's Botanical name and Why? Who Invented Botanical Names?

When a new plant is identified the scientist who discovers it will spend a long time debating with other scientists about which genus it is in, but he gets to choose the species name. Species which have been known for a very very long time were given their latin names by Linnaeus and other founders of the binomial naming system.

The latin name of the rose geranium is Pelargonium graveolens. It is not technically a Geranium, which is a different genus, but Pelargonia are generally called Geranium by gardeners, as that is the category which scientists used to put them in. Graveolens is latin for 'heavy-smelling' apparently!

If you look any living organism up in Wikipedia it will often tell you who named it. The person's surname will appear in the box in the top right hand corner, next to the species name, in little black letters. P. graveolens isn't recorded there but Pelargonium genus was named by Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle.

How did Rose Geranium get it's Botanical name and Why? Who Invented Botanical Names?
I agree with Curious Orange that you can tell who named any given species by looking for the name or abbreviation of the name at the end of each Latin name, but I might add that Linnaeus is generally given credit for our current system of botanical names, in 1753 (though others contributed ideas). He named so many plants, and is so well-known, that you will often simply see an L. at the end of a botanical name.

(Not all sources include the author, as the person is known, when they give a botanical name.)

Any information on Geranium leaf?
You haven't been very specific about the information your require, ie is it to do with health, growing, climate etc.

Health - A Pelargonium (geranium) from South Africa with Dark Red Flowers known as :

Umckaloabo. Helps loosen mucous but more important it strengthens the immune system against bacteria and viruses. The bodies own defence mechanisms are stimulated (increase in the bodies own interferon(against viruses)and also an increase in killer cell production to fight the baddies).

Geranium leaves can be scented or unscented - just search on line for information on the Geranium leaf.

In the UK a Geranium plant is hardy and is a perennial.

Pelargonium also referred to as Geranium because it has almost identical leaf to the Geranium is of the same family but is in fact tender and will not survive frost.

Reply:all i know is theyre kinda shaped like a star with very rounded corners and theyre fragrant when crushed. Oh, and the oil extracted from them can be used in aromatherapy to help relaxation.
Reply:You might want to mention what context you need information in? Do you need taxinomical information, do you need uses of the plant?
Reply:The geraniums are grown for the scent

of their leaves as opposed to their flowers. Native

to the Cape of Good Hope, they were first

introduced into Europe in the early 1600s.

They have glands in the leaves in which essential oils are stored.

These essential oils are used in Aromatherapy.

The leaves are compound and can show divergent palmately retuculate venation(arrangement of viens on the leaf in the form of palm, reticulate because network like arrangement of veins and veinlets)

The leaf form is highly variable and the leaf texture can be smooth, velvety or even sticky. It is the back of the leaf that releases the scent for which each geranium is known and named.

Is the geranium plant a male or female plant?

Never heard of that, it can grow and flower without having another close by.

I think male and female is when a tree or shrub put out fruit

My poor geranium's blooms are gone and the leaves have blackish circles on them. What have I done wrong?

I have been watering it fairly often (almost daily) and have it placed in full-to-partial sun. Am I over-watering? Can it be rescued?

My poor geranium's blooms are gone and the leaves have blackish circles on them. What have I done wrong?
Geraniums can't take frost. If the nights have been really cold, you might want to bring them inside.
Reply:A lot of Geraniums have blackish circles on them this is very common for a Geranium. But you could be over watering them I would only water them if the dirt feels dry. Most Geraniums can handle the direct sunlight have you fertilized it at all ?
Reply:Maybe you over watered them.
Reply:You may be overwatering them. Water them when the soil is dry down about 1/4 an inch, and only water on the soil. Try not to get water on the plant, especially the leaves. Rainwater won't hurt them, but tap water will.
